Horrible. Manipulative, gaslighter dealing with him. Tried to tell me what I said when I didn't. Yelled at me throughout the 7 months of having him represent me. Paid him $3000 retainer, plus another couple of thousand during that time too. Boasted about his years of experience yet didn't show it whenever there was an issue regarding not knowing what to do with my ex who never responded to mail. So much for having experience. Found out later through another source of a cheaper and easier way to get divorced and when brought to Barry's attention he was silent then tried to blame me for things, then decided to go that route but suddenly wanted more money even though he still didn't do anything substantial with what I already paid him. Never got a divorce date. His plan is to drag things out, and charge you for emails and phone calls until he knows your funds are exhausted. He refused payments go forward after knowing I couldn't charge any more money off my CC but only wanted more money paid in full so when I couldn't do that he dropped me. He chose to not represent me but then tricked me by saying I had to go to the Prothonotarys office to file that he wasn't representing me anymore. I said you're the one who doesn't want to represent me anymore, you're the lawyer... shouldn't you be doing that filing? He said no, that I had to do it. Meanwhile, that made me look like I made that decision. I tried fighting him for the retainer back in Small Claims court and that's another joke with judge Kristina Anzini who knew him. Isn't that a conflict of interest? She heard his lies and accepted them yet I wasn't able to defend myself after the lies because I had spoken first and I guess we only get one time to speak. She threatened that if I spoke during his speaking she would mute me or close the case. I had to sit silently listening to his lies. He had more lies than I had truth about his BS. These lawyers and judges all help each other get away with the crap they instill on people. Maybe they just split the money or pay each other off. I really do believe that. But God sees all and knows all. So when bad things happen to these types of people I hope they look at their lives and remember how they treated others for greed. I would never recommend Barry Cohen to anyone ever. Do yourself a favor and trust me on this. I don't have mental problems as he claims. Barry is a joke.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
