    Hired Law firm 1994-1996
    Recommends this Law firm
Mr. James Pokorny and his associate, Mr. Gary Nichols represented me in 1994 through 1996. In 1986 while I was a homeless teenager, I hung around the wrong people and got in lots of trouble which resulted in me accepting a felony charge in a plea bargain for receiving stolen property. I was actually under 18 at the time but for fear that my parents would find out what I did, I had lied about my age so they wouldn't be contacted and I was sentenced as an adult. Little did I understand about the consequences of that mistake and how it would affect my life afterwards. I completely changed my life after this but that felony charge in my records kept me from my life goals. I engaged with the district attorney's office for help and Mr. Pokorny was recommended to me. Through Mr. Pokorny's and Mr. Gary Nichols' hard work, they helped me get that felony reduced to a misdemeanor and then dismissed. What happened afterwards was that I was able to make a 25 year career in the military and honorably retired. During my career, I had a Top Secret SCI clearance, protected US presidents and foreign dignitaries, worked at the highest levels of government in counter-terrorism and military intelligence. I even graduated college and the police academy, eventually standing up a Sheriffs Department Bomb Squad. After retirement, I went on to instruct military personnel and law enforcement in intelligence gathering, explosive forensics and SWAT & Bomb Squad operations. In 2014, I retired from government life. I'm currently a licensed real estate broker and mortgage broker with licenses in 39 states. Through the years, I have always wanted to come back and express my deepest gratitude to Mr. Pokorny and Mr. Nichols. Through their selfless actions, they gave me a fresh start and another chance in life. @ Mr. Pokorny and Mr. Nichols. I want you to know that I did not forget about what you have done for me. I did not take for granted, the opportunities that you have given to me. I want you to know that for the past 40 years, I have been a law abiding and productive member of society. I have protected the public and served our Country honorably. My life would have never turned out to be the way it is now without your hard work. I owe both of you so much and I want the public to know that. I don't know if you remember who I am because I'm sure you are doing so much for so many other people. Thank you gentlemen, you are my saving grace!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
