I was contacted by him on a referral on a discrimination case from his firm. He sent me an email and said he would call me. When we spoke, after my giving the firm a detailed email of the case, he thought I was seeking help in APPEALING an application for social security, which I had clearly stated in my email to the firm was NOT THE CASE! He Didn't listen to what I said was the case, just assumed because I am disabled it was an SSA appeal and suddenly had to get off the phone, because he said he CAN'T do "those cases", meaning SSA disability appeals, when that was NOT The case! I didnt get back to him for a couple of months, as I was busy with other things. When I DID call him back, he spent less than 2 minutes talking over me like I had three heads and fangs, so he didnt have to listen to me and hung up on me without even the least explanation for his actions, like I was just dirt!! I wouldn't hire him to write a demand letter to a sewer or trash pick up utility, or litigate a five dollar parking ticket if I were you!! He was SERIOUSLY INATTENTIVE, and spoke down to me like I was an enemy of the state, like he would get in trouble for even speaking to me! He got off the phone so quick the breaze almost blew me over! And he doesn't even know me, and I never spoke to him before!!!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
