Going through a divorce was difficult, but Jackie helped ease the burden with her competence and empathy. She clearly explained the process every step of the way, offering reassurance when things seemed uncertain. Her professionalism and expertise in the law were evident as she skillfully applied it to my situation. Additionally, her services were reasonably priced, making her support even more valuable during such a challenging time.

Very disappointing. I thought very highly of her at first. My experience started off well, Jackie was funny and seemed personable, honest, and affordable. Everything went well until I switched over to sending check payments instead of allowing her to use my credit card. A credit card processing fee should be 2% to 3% for every $100. I was told upfront by her that it was $19.00 every time she uses my credit card and that she doesn’t pocket the money and that it was the “app fee” and that Square gets that payment. I looked up the Square App fee and they personally charge only 2.6%, so obviously I was being over charged and that money was going someplace else besides to them. She also over charged for emails and short phone calls that a lot of the time when she contacted me, it didn’t have anything to do with my case, but was about her. When told that I was having some financial issue and had to back off contact with her for a little bit, There was no understanding or leniency. If I didn’t answer her phone calls or emails, she still billed me for not answering. No motions or contempts were ever made on the petitioner when I inquired when he violated several times, I was told it would be $1000 per motion or contempt for everything I wanted to happen if she did it. Also out of pettiness, because I wouldn’t give her the late fee charge because my check wasn’t late, she started to up my bill hundreds more dollars the last two months for work she wasn’t even doing. So basically I was paying for nothing to be done about my case for a year, and was just paying for her to talk to me from time to time, and her appearances in court. Very greedy, petty, and dishonest.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
