A client of mine owed a significant debt and I could not make him pay. I hired Matt to collect and he got the job done quickly and professionally. I particularly liked how he thought strategically to make sure we had an end game. I will certainly hire him again if I find myself in the same situation.

Matt Kaplan represents me in an unpaid wages case. My employer simply refused to pay part of what she owed me. He has done an excellent job in letting me know what my legal rights are and in representing me. I strongly endorse Matt to anyone looking for an attorney.

This guy is definitely not the worst I had - a.k.a. I don't have legal grounds to sue for negligence or malpractice, but he took a month to file a notice of appearance in my case (19-4702 4th Circuit). I sent him everything he needed to file to get a reversal and he chose just to withdraw instead. Results may vary, but check his past record with appeals before selecting him.

After previously retaining the services of another attorney and having faced an initial unsuccessful outcome, I was left at an impasse. When I reached out to Matt for a consultation he gave me an honest, thorough assessment of my situation and laid out a strategy for my case going forward. Matt’s representation was exceptional in all regards. Throughout the entire process he was quick to address any questions or concerns I had and always provided me with no-nonsense, sincere advice. His level of dedication to my case was simply remarkable and I was especially impressed at how Matt meticulously approached my case from multiple angles, conducting extensive background research as well as anticipating potential obstacles and preparing accordingly. Dealing with the complexities of law/litigation etc. is a daunting proposition for anyone, however having an attorney who not only is knowledgeable and experienced, but is willing to provide frank advice makes all the difference, and I owe my case’s success to Matt, and wholeheartedly recommend him!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
