Shortly after my divorce I found myself facing a post-divorce litigation with my ex-wife; And as I have been disappointed with the services of my previous attorney, I searched for a different attorney, and happened to find a comment left by someone on reddit - in reference to an attorney named Bruce Steinfeld - that caught my attention: "Bruce is both an excellent attorney and just a genuinely good, compassionate guy, very much geared toward the best interests of his clients" I called Bruce, and he spent a full hour discussing my situation with me; And while by then I have already talked to quite a few attorneys, what made Bruce exceptional and stand tall far beyond all the rest were the fact that the advice he gave me was not only truly in my long-term best interests, but also at the expense of his own best interests, and yet he did so naturally and genuinely out of will to serve his best, as if I - who was a complete stranger to him at that point - were his relative or friend; And the fact his breathtakingly piercing and razor-sharp x-raying analysis of my situation left me in awe; And the fact he - with his vast nearly-40-years of practicing law - actually spent his own time to educate the clueless-me about further aspects, like the inherent uncertainty of going to court, and cost-benefit given my situation; And the fact that instead of feeding the flames of my anger (since I had been victimized by my ex-wife) he tried to extinguish them, consistently urging me to deescalate whenever I wanted to escalate, and talking about the power of forgiveness and of 'taking the high road', and the need for me to just move-on with my life; And the fact that when, at the end of that call, I - who felt deeply grateful for everything he practically gifted me during just that call - offered to pay him for his time, he declined, explaining that he provides free initial consultations to prospective clients. I hired Bruce. And now, nearly a year later, as my case came to a conclusion, it turned out Bruce's legal advice at the very beginning was perceptive, if not clairvoyant, as if he had the ability to see the future. And yet with that conclusion there is some sadness in me, as during this emotionally-loaded journey of mine Bruce became dear to me: His integrity, ethics, honesty and fairness became my conscience's own north-star; His both-feet-on-the-ground and steady hand bettered my own thinking; His consistency in always seeking and seeing the bigger-picture-best-for-me made me trusting and calm. His self-being helped me improving my own self-being. And for all of the above, Bruce has earned my highest, unqualified recommendation, both professionally and personally.

Hired Attorney Bruce R. Steinfeld 2018
I find it extremely difficult to recommend Bruce Steinfeld’s services. I came to him with what should have been a direct and straight forward divorce case that became a longer process than necessary. No one can dispute Mr. Steinfeld's legal knowledge, as he does a fine job in translating legalese and how it applies to your specific circumstances; however, overall, he was far more concerned about billing me than he was in helping me. Examples include his dismissal for early mediation, outdated and often duplicate processing, and a lack of counsel in my best interests. Finally to mediation, the mediator provided me more counsel than Mr. Steinfeld, who was present, but admitted he was also working on other clients during the mediation. After receiving my final invoice, I was billed for the time Bruce stated he was focused on other cases. Upon reaching out via multiple emails, then phone calls only resulting in voicemails, I was consistently ignored. I felt forced to give up trying to discuss this with him upon reaching out once again, only to find out he was out of office for a three week vacation. I was concerned for my well-being and was forced to abruptly select an attorney. If you are blessed with the time to research, my opinion is that you can find a more affordable option that will provide you more care and attention.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
