Hired Attorney 2018-2019I retained his services in two years ago to represent me for Misrepresentation regarding vessel purchase I purchased a boat that was proven seaworthy by the Yacht Company's surveyor - listed as having risers and manifolds-maintained fall prior to purchase. Took boat out three times - motor failed - hired mechanic to find that the risers and manifolds had never been repaired or maintained. I called the Yacht Brokers Association of America and talked with them about the matter, because the broker used Yacht Brokers Association of America as his primary paperwork to prove reputable. I was sent his info from A Vincent J Petrella, CPYB Executive Director Yacht Brokers Association of America 105 Eastern Avenue, Suite 104 I sent you pictures and all information he needed. Quoted price of $750 to represent me. Her was paid $750. He sent one letter on my behalf to the broker and previous owner months later after I hired him. He then billing me several thousand for his letter he wrote. I reached out several calls asking why the extra fee and was charged and stated he would look into it. I also called: Vincent J Petrella, CPYB Executive Director Yacht Brokers Association of America 105 Eastern Avenue, Suite 104 and was charged for that call he made to talk with Vin his friend. Now I get bills that state I not only owe for a letter, but he is charging me 18% interest. Every month he sends me a statement including a fee with interest. To date no reply from you at all except it would be thousands more to take it further. In fact, I've received nothing form you except the copy of letter you sent on my behalf that everyone claimed that they wasn't liable and yet you're charging me all this money that your friend referred me to you. That in my eyes is just wrong.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
