Fairmax Law Review: Over a Month to Receive a $100 Refund My experience with Fairmax Law was disappointing, particularly when it came to communication, follow-through, and the handling of my refund. I initially spoke directly with the attorney regarding a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filing. After being informed that I did not qualify for Chapter 7, I was given the option of pursuing Chapter 13 or requesting a refund of my $100 deposit. I requested the refund and followed the instructions I was given. What should have been a straightforward process turned into more than a month of repeated follow-ups. I sent multiple text messages, made phone calls, and repeatedly sought updates. I was directed to the billing department and told that my request had been forwarded, escalated, and marked as a top priority. Despite these assurances, my refund remained outstanding, and I was not given a concrete resolution. Eventually, after exhausting my attempts to resolve the matter directly, I gave notice that I intended to escalate the issue and filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Only after that escalation did the refund finally move toward resolution. I have since received my $100 back, but it took a formal complaint to get the matter resolved. My frustration was never simply about the amount of money. It was about the lack of a clear refund process, the repeated need to follow up, and the fact that multiple assurances did not result in payment until outside intervention became necessary. I’m glad the financial matter is finally resolved, but that does not erase the experience. I believe prospective clients deserve to know that obtaining this refund required repeated messages, phone calls, and a BBB complaint rather than a timely, straightforward resolution. Ultimately, resolving a problem after a formal complaint is filed is not the same as handling it professionally from the beginning. I hope Fairmax Law improves its communication and refund procedures so that other clients do not have to go through the same experience. I am sharing this review to provide an honest account of what happened, not to dispute the attorney’s assessment of my bankruptcy eligibility. The issue was how my refund request was handled from start to finish. After researching Fairmax Law further, I found numerous complaints on the Better Business Bureau website, along with reviews on other platforms describing similar frustrations involving communication, delayed responses, and difficulty getting matters resolved. Seeing these recurring concerns made my own experience even more disappointing. While I cannot independently verify every other customer’s account, the similarities in the issues described raise legitimate concerns about the consistency of the firm’s communication and follow-through. In my opinion, this is feedback the firm should take seriously rather than focusing solely on the fact that my refund was eventually issued.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
