STAY AWAY! Marcia Kasdan is completely dishonest and unethical. Save yourself time and money and do not select her as your attorney. Marcia charged my friend?s credit card $2500 for a divorce agreement document as agreed upon. Both parties signed the document at her office in front of a notary. After trying to obtain his signed copy, she completely lied stating no such document existed. Marcia gave him the run around for two weeks! We had to get an outside attorney involved and magically after multiple heated phone calls, the signed document appeared in her computer, which she has acknowledged. Now she is refusing to give him his copy, which lists his name, that he signed at her office, in front of her notary. Marcia Kasdan had no problem taking his $2500 but has yet to give him the signed document he paid for. After doing research it appears that this is not the first time Marcia Kasdan has practiced unethically, as she has previously been suspended in the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Record keeping violations, negligent misappropriation, dishonesty, fraud, deceit and misrepresentation. She also continued practicing law during her suspension and failed to disclose this to clients. A quote from the direct case, ?the respondent had assured the court she would not make misrepresentations to her clients.? Ironic when that was one of the many reasons she was being suspended and did so after making this statement. After the suspension and the two years that she had to practice with a proctor, it seems she is now back to her ways of being dishonest, fraudulently taking people?s money, and being deceitful. She is grossly negligent to the law and flat out stole his money. Now we are paying another attorney to obtain the document to which he already paid for, filing a complaint with the bar association, small claims court and better business bureau. There is nothing honest about her or her practice. Do your research on her and save yourself thousands of dollars!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
