The law firm Gilman, McLaughlin & Hanrahan LLP has roots in the Boston legal community that go back 70 years. We pride ourselves in delivering large firm services but with the economies that are the hallmark of a smaller, more efficient firm. Our reputation as effective litigators is unsurpassed, and the firm focuses on providing practical solutions tailored to each client's problems. The firm's senior partners, Robert E. McLaughlin, Sr. and David G. Hanrahan, are fellows in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a distinction which places them in the top 1% of the trial bar in Massachusetts. Our litigation department has a broad base of experience in almost every major area of law including commercial, construction, real estate, employment law, labor relations, personal injury, criminal law, domestic relations and landlord-tenant law. Our law firm represents major landlords in the Boston area. Our litigation attorneys practice in all of the federal and state courts and administrative agencies in Massachusetts.

We also service the transactional needs of our clients. Our transactional attorneys work efficiently and economically to deliver a wide range of legal services, in the areas of real estate, corporate law, estate planning and administration and business planning. The transactional attorneys have handled all aspects of the purchase, sale, financing, development and leasing of multi-million dollar commercial and residential properties for clients such as developers and medium-sized banks. This department is also experienced in advising clients with respect to troubled real estate projects, including negotiating commercial loan workouts with major banks and institutional lenders. We represent closely held businesses of various sizes on the broad range of issues confronting these clients, including the selection of the appropriate form in which to conduct business, the conduct of corporate, partnership and limited liability company affairs and the purchase and sale of businesses.

Experience has taught us that clients demand four essential things from their lawyer: 1) dedication to their legal problem, 2) high quality legal work, 3) personal service, and 4) a cost effective resolution of their legal matter. All of the attorneys at Gilman McLaughlin & Hanrahan constantly work to meet the high standards that the firm has set for itself and that clients have come to expect from us.

Some law firms have cases; we have clients. Our tradition of excellence and broad range of experience makes us ready to meet the legal challenges that our clients will be confronting in the new century.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
