A world leader in intellectual property protection, Hovey Williams LLP has a 94-year track record of protecting our clients’ patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and other intellectual property in virtually every major business sector.

The firm was founded in 1929 by C. Earl Hovey and Roy Hamilton, just weeks before the most devastating stock market crash in U.S. history and the triggering of the Great Depression. The two entrepreneurs led the firm through difficult economic times, growing it into a thriving practice with specialties in patent, trademark, and copyright law.

Bob Hovey, Earl’s son, joined the firm in 1956, followed by Warren Williams in 1957. For more than 50 years, they continued the firm’s tradition of helping innovative individuals and businesses create and secure their unique products and ideas.

Today, our client-focused team of experienced attorneys, associates, patent agents, and subject matter specialists continues to build on the firm’s foundation of strong values and progressive thinking, while integrating new strategies and techniques into our portfolio of services.

Hovey Williams is the law firm of choice for referring attorneys in Greater Kansas City and beyond. We have earned a stellar reputation globally as well. Foreign businesses seeking to expand into the U.S. rely on us for the same broad array of intellectual property legal services that we provide our U.S.-based clients.

Whether you’re an established company, a startup, an inventor, or a referring attorney, we provide you with a unique combination of expert guidance, cost-effective results, and personal service.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
