Charleston Maritime Personal Injury Lawyer

Our South Carolina, admiralty and maritime law firm offers clients quality representation in this highly complicated area of law. Admiralty and maritime law applies to legal issues dealing with accidents or personal injuries involving boats, vessels, cruise ships, jet skis, fishing boats that occur at sea, rivers, the Intracoastal Waterways and certain lakes. If you have been injured while on a recreational boat or while working on a vessel, admiralty and maritime laws apply to your claim. Injuries that occur on the water or on boats have completely different liability standards and remedies under the general maritime law than injuries that occur on land. Being represented by an attorney who specializes in land based injuries may be detrimental to someone with a boat injury because the land based lawyer might not fully understand the intricacies of maritime law, harming your chances for a full recovery. It is important to have a South Carolina maritime attorney who fully understands the federal laws and regulations and the general maritime law that applies to your situation.

Our Attorney

Attorney S. Scott Bluestein is highly qualified to represent clients in admiralty and maritime law issues. Mr. Bluestein received his J.D. from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He adds further distinction to his legal degree with a Masters in Law in admiralty from Tulane Law School. Mr. Bluestein was admitted to the state bar of South Carolina in 1992. Mr. Bluestein is a member of the Trial Lawyers of America and represents clients in the United States District Courts and South Carolina state courts. He teaches continuing legal education classes in admiralty and maritime personal injury to lawyers, writes articles for various legal publications, and has been a guest on the local television program Ask Professor Lori.

Scott Bluestein offers clients accessible legal representation in an efficient and effective manner. He corresponds with clients via email and is readily available to address your concerns. Clients rely on him to pursue compensation for injuries and for representation in trial situations, if needed.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
