James T. "Ted" Ryan was admitted to the practice of law in Connecticut in 1964 and, after a stint in the Republic of China with the Air Force as a Judge Advocate, he and his family settled in Woodbury in 1968. He established his own practice in 1982 and has practiced in Woodbury and its surrounding towns since then.

Although Ted is engaged in the general practice of law, much of the firm's emphasis is on real estate law in all its aspects, especially:

  • Representing buyers or sellers in real estate transactions
  • Personally performing title searches and issuing title insurance policies
  • Drawing deeds, mortgages, leases, and contracts
  • Closing mortgage and refinance transactions

Another major area of his practice is estate planning and administration, especially:

  • Counseling clients to assist them in "getting their affairs in order"
  • Crafting wills, living wills, living trusts, powers of attorney, and medical directives
  • Drawing probate-avoiding living trusts
  • Settlement of estates through the probate court or otherwise
  • Trust administration
  • Preparing Connecticut Estate Tax returns

As a sole practitioner, ably assisted by two legal assistants, Maureen in real estate and Dawn in probate, Ted is able to provide personal attention to client needs and to provide exceptional legal service at reasonable cost to clients.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Ted's office is located at 175 Main Street South in Woodbury (across from the Post Office) serving clients in Bethlehem, Middlebury, Oxford, Roxbury, Southbury, and Woodbury as well as other area towns.

5.0 out of 5 stars

He is an excellent Attorney. The best of the best. I found his name in my deceased mother?s papers and decided to use him to review mortgage papers. A few years later I had him assist me with a RE closing and Title work. He found through incredible diligence that the previous owner had not paid taxes and that the property was ready to go up for a tax sale auction the day after I would have closed on the property. There had been no notices published anywhere about the delinquency or the auction. He dodged a huge bullet for me!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
