Consulted Attorney 2016-2021Jeffrey Sherter was a forceful, kind attorney who fought very hard for his clients. He often worked for free because he felt strongly that he could help people. His costs were lower than anyone and he worked nights and weekends to accommodate his clients who were not always able to meet mid week and mid day. Jeff was very much a compassionate man. He was loved by Madeleine, Charles, and myself. He was so good to our children. We love you and miss you terribly. I wish you could see Madeleine now! She is going to college in the fall. I know you would be so proud of her. She misses you so much. She's running marathons in your honor and she writes about you in her essays. I was remembering you played the guitar and couldn't remember what songs you played. It made me sad and miss you more because you're not here for me to ask. We all think about you and miss you. I hope you and Jasper are together somewhere where the grass is green, there's a bench for you to sit on, and you have a sandwich and Diet Coke next to you. I love you.

Hired Attorney 2018I hired and paid him to subpoena an expert witness. He sends the paperwork to the wrong address and they contest the witness at the hearing. This delayed the proceedings by several months and cost me thousands of dollars extra. He would not give a refund.

Hired Attorney 2019Mr. Sherter was much more concerned with the opposing attorney and the Children's attorney it always seemed as though he was afraid of them. He refused to contact them and would say "bias always occurs". We had to ask him if we could get a psychological evaluation. He did nothing that I did not ask for out of desperation. The evaluation showed that everything I said was in fact true. He just went along with everything they said he never interjected to stopped them from railroading right over me. I finally had to get another attorney. Someone who would try to speak with the opposing attorney and the Children's counsel. Someone who is willing to change the tone and atmosphere.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
