Mr. Wattey took a nice retainer from me, let me buy him lunch (that he took to go), saw my son in prison for 15 minutes, as a second thought because he was visiting another inmate. That was the end of it. I drove 3 hours to meet with him and he spent 10 minutes with me. He took his sandwich and left. He did zero, I never received an invoice and never heard from him again. I wouldn’t take the time to write this, but these guys know how vulnerable a mother is and they know how much we love our kids, we are the perfect target. It is so painful to be lied to, promised and taken advantage of by lawyers like Keith Wattey. I gave him my savings and believed him. I finally confronted him and he said sorry, but where’s my money? Ripped off. By the way, my son was 19 when he went in for attempted murder, no priors, disciplinary free for 16 years! AA chair, NA chair, Clerk to a Sergeant, vocational certificate, college grad with 2 degrees and etc. He is a perfect candidate for Keith and Keith walked away from a Uncomplicated win. We will do it without Keith. I owe it to anyone looking for Keith Wattey’s help to beware.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
