Hired Law firm 2023Beware: Questionable Legal Ethics I hired Attorney Mr. Martin expecting thorough legal support regarding a potential credit card fraud linked to my former address. Here’s a recap of my experience: Initial Contact: After receiving a call from the police about this issue, I followed the usual advice to get an attorney involved. Service Provided: Mr. Martin's involvement was limited to leaving a single voicemail for the police, requesting a callback. That was the entirety of his engagement. Outcome: The police inquiry was concluded without further action needed beyond their initial contact. Lack of Communication: After this, the attorney stopped responding. My attempts to communicate via email and phone went unanswered. I sent an email on September 9, 2023, voicing my dissatisfaction about the fee relative to the service rendered, but to no avail. Ethical Concerns: The fee of $3,000 for what amounted to a phone call raises significant ethical questions about billing practices. Although there was an initial effort to contact the police, the fee for such minimal involvement appears excessively high. This ordeal has left me skeptical of Mr. Martin's ethical standards. I strongly advise potential clients to consider other attorneys who might offer more conscientious representation and billing.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
