Attorney Cinda L. Scales is the epitome of wise counsel. Several years ago she not only gave me a voice in a court that repeatedly abused its legal discretion, but won all except one that we later won on appeal at the West Virginia Supreme Court. Mrs. Scales is highly ethical, warm, tactfully honest with legal advice and a street-fighter in the courtroom. Thanks to attorney Scales my two teenage children live with me and I receive a fair child support amount for their well-being. She is worth her weight in gold!

Stephanie Scales provided us with exceptional legal representation. She, and her administrative staff, consistently demonstrated professionalism and extensive legal acumen in handling our case. It became abundantly clear that the jurists and legal peers that she faced held her in high regard and respected her exceptional abilities. We would highly recommend her firm for any legal services within her areas of specialization.

You have to give at least 1/2 star for the review to count but if I could, I would not give Cinda Scales any stars. She came extremely highly recommended but other than pushing a lot of paper and billing me for it, she really did nothing for me in my divorce. At the first hearing she was sitting on the steps in the courthouse and when I approached, she asked me if I was Xxxxx Xxxxx. That should have been my first clue that this was not going to go well. Second clue was when she kept asking ME about information I had provided to her on numerous occasions. Worst thing though was after I had signed my Pre-Trial Memorandum, had it notarized and submitted, she something in it WITHOUT my knowledge and used the original signature page and submitted it to the court - AGAIN, without my knowledge and then she had the audacity to bill me for it. At the final hearing she basically questioned why I was worried or concerned with "not important stuff" related to the property distribution and I felt like I was basically badgered into accepting whatever she, the judge and the opposing attorney had come up with as a settlement. I am very much considering filing some type of formal complaint against her because she certainly did not provide any service to me . . . I could have done better (and cheaper) filing for divorce using online tools. Do your homework before hiring this law firm!!

I was looking for an aggressive attorney to pursue a case and I reached out to this law office. I requested a consultation in which I would present a hypothetical about a custody case regarding myself and partner. They refused me a consultation due to attorney client privilege on a hypothetical. Jessica was extremely rude and interrupted me several times and seemed to want to rush to get me off the phone. I can see why the ratings are so low if this how you treat a potential customer, imagine how they treat their clients. I called several other attorneys and never received this kind of treatment from them.

She as extremely rude, unlikable and a terrible listener. She seemed more worried about being done and finishing the case executing general requests without a attitude.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
