This firm is a joke I hired them for a 14 year common law divorce. I spoke with Mr.Nygaard once during the consult. Over the next year I emailed , called and could never get anyone till I started sending not so nice emails. Then they fired me as a client . On grounds i couldnt be reached which was lies I emailed Janet several times with my new email address my new phone number even told her that I was living with my ex and that I needed something to happen pretty quick I was tired of living there and things were getting bad and Janet proceeded with sending me email stating that they were going to fire me as a client because they cannot reach me the court date that does she sent to me did not match the court date that was at the courthouse so she told me that the court was on 27 day but in reality it was on the 17. The day before on the 16th she called me and emailed me my ex's final offer. Which no problem getting ahold of me that day. They are sneaky and hard to get ahold of they took my money and done nothing they said we had mediation but never did.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
