"Dayna Vanhook works without consulting her clients on anything; that’s just the first issue. She doesn't feel it is necessary to speak to or meet with her client. I spent an entire year waiting on her to procure a simple divorce settlement after providing all the information she needed from me the first week of our business together. Not only did she fail to ask for a proper 50/50 settlement, she never got the necessary discovery from my spouse to even know what a fair settlement would be. Worst of all she canceled court mandated mediation, by literally lying (in writing) and telling the courts we had a settlement in place, when we did not. She hadn't even told me of any offer at that time. Vanhook failed to get ANY settlement, not just a fair settlement -ANY settlement. She took thousands of dollars in fees, wasting my time and money when I could not afford to waste a penny. Vanhook also cancelled a court date, claiming she “wasn’t ready” (month 10 of our 11+ month business together) when my signed settlement was ready to be presented to the courts. After taking thousands in payment upfront for a service never provided, she was rude and almost hostile when asked to provide copies of simple communication and/or proper documentation for the case. She literally sent me a picture of my divorce papers and told ME to go to the courthouse to get a legal copy. Look elsewhere if you need someone to fight for you because Dayna Vanhook lost my chance for a divorce settlement, she never returned a penny of her fees, she wouldn’t even meet this client (she cancelled my one face-to-face meeting 15 minutes prior to our scheduled time as I sat in the parking lot about to walk in) nor would she speak by phone until I flat out demanded it. Which means that everything I write here, I have documented in writing by emails between us. Heaven forbid she even apology for her own ineptitude after losing my settlement chance: Heartless. Never in my life have have I had a worse experience with a “professional” attorney. I don’t like writing negative reviews but in this case, I cannot sit silent and let another victim of domestic violence fall victim to Dayna Ledford Vanhook as their attorney."

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
