When my husband died, I thought the hardest part would be burying him. I was wrong. The hardest part has been trying to pick up the pieces while searching for answers that should have never been this difficult to get. For almost two years, I have been trying to obtain my late husband’s immigration file, receipts, and accounting records after thousands of dollars were paid during one of the most vulnerable times in our lives. As a widow, I was not asking for favors. I was asking for transparency, communication, and basic documentation. Instead, I was met with missing records, unanswered emails, confusing explanations, and responses that at times felt dismissive of both my husband’s case and my grief. Some documents were eventually provided, enough to show portions of his case were active, but many important questions still remain unanswered. No family should have to investigate their own loved one’s immigration case while grieving a death. Immigration clients are not just “cases.” These are real families putting their trust, futures, and life savings into the hands of people they believe will fight for them. Many immigrants are already scared, vulnerable, and unfamiliar with the legal system. They deserve honesty, professionalism, compassion, and accountability not confusion and silence. Please protect yourselves. Keep copies of every payment, every receipt, every filing, every text message, every email, and every promise made to you. Ask questions. Follow up. Document everything. I stayed quiet for a long time out of grief and respect. But silence protects the wrong people. I DO NOT RECOMMEND VICKY CURRIE

    Consulted Law firm 2026
I advise exercising extreme caution if considering Vicky Currie for legal representation, particularly for anyone currently detained. During a friend’s consultation, she was the only attorney out of five who made unrealistic promises regarding detention release and asylum eligibility—results that did not align with the facts of the case. Furthermore, there are several professional red flags. She requested payment via Zelle to a non-profit organization ("Out of the Ashes Development Council") that appears to be permanently closed, rather than using a standard law office billing system that provides receipts. Most importantly, upon searching her background, we found that she has been disciplined by the State Bar on several occasions. It is deeply concerning to see a legal professional target vulnerable individuals with false hope and questionable billing practices.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
