Consulted Law firm 2020My 76 year old mother reached out to Floyd about a year ago, he was super helpful. Today she reached out to him because the elevator has been out in her building for almost 3 months. The entire building wants to hire an attorney. Apparently, he got very angry and told her she was living in a reduced rent apartment in prime real estate location and she should be glad, and he's to busy helping veterans and holocaust survivors. Maybe he is having a bad day. Maybe he should send his clients to my mother's building, if they aren't elderly. My now 77 year old mother has to walk up 10 flights of stairs. Are there even holocaust survivors left? Sad, I referred a bunch of people to this guy, now I have to call them and tell them not to go.

Consulted Law firm 2020I was referred to Colorado Affordable Legal Services by an organization who helps people experiencing difficulty finding resources. At first, the conversation was kind but then it turned into a sales pitch, where Floyd said that I had to think about if the cost lawyer was worth getting out of my lease. Completely fair and I wasn't looking for freebies. However, when I explained I am a freelancer and lost 85% of my income due to the COVID crisis, Floyd stated "Well, I guess you don't have anyone who could help you with the financial piece of this, right? So you are stuck there. I wish you the best of luck." and hung up. There are way better ways to respond to people who are calling for options. Kind ways. This was NOT a good strategy. I will not recommend Colorado Affordable Legal Services as there was no sensitivity on the phone coming from their end. In response to this, I felt way worse about my situation than when i first called and wish I had never called them.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
