Melinda is Certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Matrimonial Law Attorney. Melinda is admitted to practice law in New Jersey, New York and Colorado. She is a solo practitioner in Bergen County practicing for thirty-two years, where her practice is devoted to Family Law. Melinda is a member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Family Law Practice Committee, a past member of the Supreme Court of New Jersey Ad Hoc Committee on Trade Names, a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association, New Jersey Association for Justice, Bergen County Bar Association and Women Lawyers in Bergen. She has been the Chair of a Bergen County Early Settlement Panel since 1988, helping litigants to resolve their cases. Melinda is also a Special Ethics Master, as the Trier of Fact, for complex Ethics cases. Melinda is a Court-Approved Family Law Economic Mediator.

Having litigated for several high profile clients, Melinda is often asked to provide legal commentary for TV stations, such as Tru TV, Fox TV and MSNBC, providing insightful legal analysis. Melinda has been a guest TV commentator since 1998.

Melinda is accessible to her clients first and foremost. She is committed to providing collaborative, insightful and hands-on legal outcomes for her clients, whether it is a negotiated Property Settlement Agreement, a litigated Plenary Hearing or a Domestic Violence Trial.

More than anything, Melinda understands and "gets" the emotional turmoil impacting on the client and impending divorce in Family Law. They are inextricably tied, and must be delicately unwound with sensitivity, so that the client is not lead down a path of "litigation through anger", which leads to excessive counsel fees, frustration and no resolutions. Melinda also vigorously represents litigants that are unmarried, who need to resolve support and parenting issues. Melinda is accessible to her clients, and is passionate about the practice of law to help clients attain solutions.

5.0 out of 5 stars

Melinda Singer is a dynamic thinker who easily adapted our strategy as my case progressed, and she was always organized and prepared. My ex-wife?s lawyer was very difficult and tried to drag the case out, but Melinda anticipated every move in her playbook and was able to counter. Her knowledge of the law and ethics ensured I was always on sound legal footing and able to speak confidently to both our mediator and judge throughout the proceedings. No matter how I felt, she kept us on point and focused on ensuring I got the best possible outcome in my settlement. I am very grateful she wrote the final divorce settlement, which is thorough and includes several provisions to protect me moving forward. Melinda and Crystal are an excellent team. They will help you through your divorce and ensure you get the best outcome possible so you can restart your life.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
