    Hired Law firm 2014-2017
I hired Michael Kushner back in 2014, paying over 12 thousands dollars, only to find that he was negligent and utterly indifferent to protecting my interests. His behavior and handling of my case made it seem as though he was prosecuting me rather than defending me. He rarely showed up for my court cases in Warren County and should have never taken the case if he didn't have the time or capacity to travel. He manipulated me into “confessing” and pleading guilty for something I didn't do, just to take the cash and the easy way out. He got what he wanted and ruined my life in the process. Don't listen to any of his attempts to save face under this review—read the real reviews, and you'll understand that the horrible ones reflect real people's experiences, including mine. To understand how badly he manipulated and failed me, consider that this was my first run-in with the law. I was charged with something I didn't do, simply for being at the wrong place at the wrong time with a psychopathic ex-boyfriend who abused, threatened, and blackmailed me into being there. I hired Kushner because I found out there was a warrant for my arrest. His worst and most damning failure occurred right at the start when he showed up hours late to my arraignment, where I had arranged to turn myself in on a bogus warrant. Having had zero prior dealings with the law, I arrived thinking I was about to turn myself in in a civilized manner as planned. Instead, I was ruthlessly arrested before I even knew what was happening. I protested, saying I was there to turn myself in and needed to wait for my lawyer, but it was all wrong. Vulnerable and without defense, I ended up with slapped with an additional resisting arrest charge that would have never happened if Kushner had been there on time to guide and protect me. To this day, I deal with a bonus criminal record because of Michael Kushner. If that wasn’t a bad enough reflection of his representation, it only got worse. He missed several of my court dates, was late to others, and even threw me under the bus to the DA. He then literally gaslit me into falsely “confessing” drug crimes that I never did that were done by the person I was with at the time, and manipulated me into pleading guilty to a drug felony I never committed, supposedly redeemable by reducing it to a misdemeanor after five years. A month after he washed his hands of me, I found a news article tarnishing my name, stating that I had pled guilty to a felony. Even though my charge was later reduced, the internet permanently stamped me as a felon. When I called Kushner, hoping he would have an ounce of empathy or care for his client’s livelihood- to help remove the article or correct the misrepresentation, he coldly told me there was nothing he could do and hung up on me. If this sounds like the kind of life-ruining representation you want, then by all means, go for it. Just don’t say you weren’t warned. And disregard anything he replies below in his defense—because he is full of BS.

Michael is an amazing lawyer. Hiring him to represent me was one of the best decisions I've ever made. He was responsive, explained everything clearly, and fought tirelessly for me. Hire him, you won't regret it.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
