Attorney Information

Overview

Carl was born and raised in Maryland. He received his B.A. from the University of Rhode Island, cum laude, in 1982; and his J.D. from The Boston University School of Law in 1985. Carl is admitted to practice before the Rhode Island and Massachusetts courts, and the United States District Court for the Districts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Carl served as a prosecutor for the Rhode Island Department of Attorney General for over ten years, where he successfully prosecuted murder, arson, driving fatality, narcotics and weapons offenses, environmental crimes and white collar crimes. Carl began his legal career in 1985 as a Staff Counsel for the United States House of Representatives, Subcommittee on Legislation and National Security.

With over twenty-five years of courtroom experience, the focus of Carl's practice includes:

Litigation

  • Business & civil litigation, including breach of contract claims, non-compete, non-solicitation and nondisclosure claims, fiduciary duty claims, shareholder disputes, commercial evictions.
  • Construction litigation, including Mechanics’ liens, contract disputes, building code violations, warranty claims, delay claims, extra work and equitable adjustment claims, change order disputes, surety bond claims. Represent residential and commercial property owners, contractors, subcontractors, developers, material and equipment suppliers, sureties.
  • Insurance defense and uninsured defense. Represent insurance companies and uninsured businesses.
  • Probate litigation, including undue influence claims and breach of fiduciary duty claims.
  • Personal injury litigation, including construction accidents and car accidents.
  • Real estate litigation, including adverse possession, spite fence, specific performance, failure to disclose defects.

Document preparation and negotiation

  • Construction documents. Draft and negotiate residential and commercial construction contracts, construction management contracts, subcontracts, design contracts, change orders, lien waivers.
  • Employment documents. Draft confidentiality, non-compete, non-solicitation and non-disclosure agreements for employers, employees, independent contractors, customers.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

  • Represent clients in arbitration and mediation.
  • Act as an arbitrator and mediator.
