Hired Law firm 2024-2025I chose Ken Matthews, a family law and divorce attorney in Columbia, SC, because I was told he would help me get what I deserved in my divorce. While things started out promising, after nearly a year the results fell far short of my expectations. Despite my ex-husband previously making well over $200k annually, all I was awarded was minimum wage child support. There was no alimony, no contribution toward housing, and no help with the children’s medical expenses. I feel like Ken Matthews did not truly fight for my fair share, and now I’m left shouldering all of the responsibility for the kids while my ex enjoys his freedom.

Hired Law firm 1985-2022Mr Mathews is a very good choice when you find yourself in need of counsel. He is very keen to the workings of law in S.C. and you want him in your corner. He is no nonsense and will dedicate his expertise and make your case his number one priority. He has lifelong ties to S.C. that comes with its advantages and if he cannot help you he will refer you to someone who can. Highly recommended.

Hired Law firm 2017-2018I paid Ken Matthews to come to Winnsboro to represent me and a divorce case but as soon as my wife violated a court order he excused himself from the case and I had no choice but to file a grievance against him

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
