Hired Law firm 2017-2019My experience here hasn’t been great. I had a personal injury case going for over two years. This accident changed my life for the worse. I can no longer do a lot of things I could before which prevented me from getting additional work when I needed it most. I was forced to apply for a settlement loan in which the lawyer promptly declined since he had to sign off of the paperwork, yet they don’t give loans to struggling clients. I was forced to settle for an amount way less than what I should have gotten considering the complete change that will affect me for the rest of my life. My lawyer knew my struggles and everything I dealt with from the beginning. When I settled, these lawyers got almost as much money as I did, which was completely insane to me. No morals whatsoever. Saying you care about your clients and actually showing you care about your clients are two totally different things. Not much effort seemed to be put into negotiating with the insurance or with the lien holders. Not to mention they gave me a settlement amount initially that did not include a huge lien but blurted out in a later conversation like it was nothing that they forgot to mention my settlement would be almost $20,000 less than what they told me it would be. If I could go back in time I would not have used Riesen Durant. It is a decision I will regret for the rest of my life.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
