Overview

Jan graduated from the University of South Dakota in 2001 with a major in Criminal Justice and a minor in Political Science. She received her Juris Doctorate from the University of South Dakota, School of Law in 2005. Following graduation from law school, Jan began her legal career at the Minnehaha County Public Advocate’s Office, where she gained valuable experience and honed her courtroom skills. Jan entered private practice in 2013, which allowed her to diversify her practice to include divorce, custody and family law matters.

In 2016, Jan opened Olson Law Firm where she has continued to provide top tier legal representation to her clients. Jan has successfully represented clients in misdemeanor trials, felony trials, and trials in juvenile court and abuse and neglect proceedings. She has achieved numerous favorable client outcomes, including jury acquittals in drug cases, assault cases, and robbery cases. Jan has argued before the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals and prevailed before the South Dakota Supreme Court.

Jan served as a Child Support Referee for almost 10 years, which experience gave her an in-depth understanding of the child support laws in South Dakota. Jan brings her over two decades of legal experience, her commitment to zealous advocacy and her unwavering belief in the justice system to ensure that her clients have a true advocate and partner as they navigate the legal process. Jan’s resolute belief in the legal system and her commitment to client advocacy have been the hallmark of her over two-decade legal career.

Outside of the courtroom, Jan enjoys gardening, cooking, concerts, trapshooting, spending time with her husband, and warm days at the beach. She also enjoys spending time with her son and his family.
