Attorney Information
Overview
I hail from Freeman, South Dakota, where I spent my formative years. In 1979, I proudly received my high school diploma from Freeman High School. Continuing my pursuit of knowledge, I enrolled at the esteemed University of South Dakota and successfully completed my Bachelor of Science degree in 1985.
In 1989, I graduated from the University of South Dakota School of Law and obtained my license to practice law from the Supreme Court of South Dakota. Following that, I joined the Minnehaha County Public Defender's Office in Sioux Falls, where I had the privilege of working alongside an exceptional team of criminal defense attorneys.
I was admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota in 1996. Throughout my career, I have tried numerous misdemeanor and felony cases across the state. My record with the Minnehaha County Public Defender's Office for the most jury trial wins remained unchallenged until 2006. For 14 years, I achieved victory in every misdemeanor case I took to trial. Additionally, I have a successful track record in most of the felony cases I have tried.
I have been the owner and operator of my private practice since 1996. My main focus has been criminal defense, where I handle a diverse range of criminal cases throughout the state.
From 1999 to 2017, I served as the contracted governor of South Dakota, providing assistance to inmates in the penitentiaries of Sioux Falls, Springfield and Yankton. My role involved addressing a wide range of matters including appeals, habeas corpus, parole issues, prison conditions and sentence modifications, among others.
I had the privilege of teaching constitutional law and legal research at two esteemed local colleges in Sioux Falls.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
