Consulted Law firm 2021I scheduled a phone consultation with Andrew Bateman a week in advance to talk about my case. On the scheduled day, I received a phone call from Austin Hayes, apparently Mr. Bateman was unable too. Over a 15 minute discussion, Austin informed me that my case would cost 3500 dollars. He did this without actually hearing any of the details about my case. In fact, when I asked him if he would like to know about my situation, his reply was that it really was not important, and that we could discuss the details of my case after I had paid the 3500 dollars. He spent the majority of the phone call bad mouthing my last attorney, and telling me that his bosses had, "threatened to kick his *** several times." Now while I admit that the thought of an attorney kicking someone's *** is laughable, and I have laughed about it several times, it is not quite the response you what to hear from an attorney you have absolutely no relationship with. Apparently there legal skills are not up to the challenge. Austin conducted the entire conversation with absolute apathy, he did not care about me, my situation, or opinion of him at all. The only thing he wanted to stress was that my case would cost 3500 dollars, and where I could bring the check. I assure you, he will not be receiving that check from me.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
