Hired Attorney 2015-2016I hired her because I understood that she was knowledgeable in a particular subject pertaining to international laws. She was supposed to help me through a divorce and settlement case, and while I cannot go into the details of how she failed to accomplish this, I can say that I walked away from the situation feeling that she never had my interests in mind. It's so important when choosing a lawyer to make sure that you are with a legal professional who is working on your behalf, and fairly for you. Her legal fees after nearly a month of work were so high I was unable to pay them upfront after she sent me my first invoice. To add insult to this situation, she then became aggressive, and threatened me legally when I asked to be put on a payment plan. When going through a divorce, choose someone who will work with you and for you, not someone who is looking to rack up extremely high financial fees in a subject they actually know nothing about. She should also have let me know when my retainer ran out so quickly and informed me before adding another 15K to the bill. Truly it was an awful experience and this should be seen by anyone considering hiring her.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
