Overview

Sam started the law firm in 2016 and now proudly practices with his father. Sam comes from a family that is dedicated to public service. His grandfather, L.H. “Cotton” Ivy, along with his father, longtime trial attorney and former Chief of the Jackson U.S. attorney’s office, Victor L. Ivy, have instilled these values into Sam. His wife, Jennifer, also an attorney, is assistant general counsel for the Tennessee Department of Transportation. Sam was mentored by renowned West Tennessee trial attorney J. Houston Gordon.

Sam has been trained and has extensive experience in handling the most serious catastrophic personal injury cases, including those unfortunate cases that have resulted in wrongful death. He has litigated to resolution a variety of cases ranging from complex product liability/defective product cases, serious automobile accident cases, to a capital murder case. He has recovered millions of dollars in settlements and verdicts for his injured clients.

Prior to opening the firm, Sam worked as an associate attorney for The Law Office of J. Houston Gordon, PLLC, externed for federal judges James D. Todd (U.S. District Court) and Bernice B. Donald (6th Circuit Court of Appeals), and worked for Pentecost & Glenn, PLLC. Sam obtained his law degree from the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, where he was selected by his peers to give the Commencement address for his graduating class. While in law school, he was also a member of Law Review, volumes 43 and 44. An honor roll student, Sam also obtained an undergraduate business degree from University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He is a member of the Howell Edmunds Jackson Inn of Court, Tennessee Bar Association, Tennessee Trial Lawyers’ Association, National Academy of Personal Injury Attorneys, and Jackson-Madison County Bar Association. He has been selected as a Top 40 under 40 Civil Plaintiffs’ attorney by the National Trial Lawyers Association for the last 5 years in a row and a top 10 trucking trial lawyer for 2023. He was also selected as a Mid-South Rising Star by Super Lawyers for 2023.

When not practicing law, Sam enjoys spending time with family and friends, including his two young daughters who keep the family very busy. He also enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time at the Tennessee River. Sam lives in Jackson with his wife and daughters.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
