A Murfreesboro native, Sumner has thirty years of practice experience before the state and federal trial courts of Tennessee. He has tried civil matters to juries throughout Middle Tennessee. He also maintains a substantial appellate practice before the Tennessee Court of Appeals and Tennessee Supreme Court. Sumner focuses his trial practice on civil matters, including eminent domain, business litigation, real estate litigation, construction litigation, and administrative litigation. He has lectured frequently on the law of eminent domain. In addition, he practices extensively in the public finance field. Sumner is a graduate of Washington & Lee University and the University of Tennessee School of Law. He is admitted to practice before all courts of the State of Tennessee, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee, the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the Rutherford/Cannon County Bar Association, the Tennessee Bar Association, and the National Association of Bond Lawyers. He maintains an "AV" preeminent peer rating by Martindale-Hubbell.
