Attorney Information

Overview

Shawn Carter is Partner of the BDF Law Group and is based in the Addison location.

Shawn originally joined the firm in 2001 as an associate in the Bankruptcy Department. In December 2014, he left the firm to join the legal department at Nationstar Mortgage LLP known more widely as Mr. Cooper. While at Mr. Cooper, Shawn was instrumental in a complete overhaul of the Bankruptcy Department working closely with management to design both processes and testing for each aspect of bankruptcy file handling from petition date to case closing. He also managed a large portfolio of bankruptcy litigation across all 50 states during the rebuild giving him keen insight into the impact loan servicing has on litigation volumes, outcomes and cost. Shawn worked closely with management in both drafting and implementing the Settlement Agreement and Consent Order Mr. Cooper entered in December 2020. This work led to Shawn becoming the main attorney for the performing servicing business at Mr. Cooper supporting multiple business units such as Escrow, Tax, Insurance, HOA, Cash Application, Payoff, Servicing Transfer and Claims. In February 2026, Shawn rejoined the firm as a partner with his practice focused on multiple areas of the firm’s products and services.

Shawn received his B.A. from Texas A&M University and his J.D. from the University of Houston School of Law. He is licensed to practice law in Texas.

In his free time, Shawn spends his time trying to keep up with his wife Diane and their two daughters Nola and Addie. He enjoys cooking, travel and attending his daughters’ dance recitals and plays at the North Texas Performing Arts theaters. Shawn and Diane have also become regular participants in their daughters’ dance studio production of The Nutcracker every December – the most nerve-racking experience of his life.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
