Firm Information

Overview

Welcome to the Law Office of Niles Illich, Ph.D., J.D., located in Addison, Texas. I am Niles Illich, and I represent clients in both criminal and civil appellate matters, addressing issues that range from driving-while-intoxicated (DWI) cases to capital murder, and from preserving favorable trial judgments to defending clients against adverse rulings. My practice also encompasses writs of habeas corpus (state petitions and federal 2254/2255 petitions), writs of mandamus, and sales tax appeals arising from assessments by the State Comptrollerโ€™s Office.

On the criminal side, I handle appeals involving aggravated robbery (frequently implicating law-of-parties doctrines), sexual assault and sexual assault of a child, possession of controlled substances, burglary of a habitation, murder convictions (including post-conviction habeas strategy), and theft offenses. In civil appeals, I represent clients in family law matters, commercial and business disputes, and personal injury appeals. I represent both appellants and appellees.

I earned a B.A. (Texas A&M University, 1998), an M.A. (Clemson University, 2001), a Ph.D. (Texas A&M University, 2007), and a J.D. (University of Houston Law Center, 2009). Following law school, I served as a briefing attorney to a Justice on the First Court of Appeals in Houston. That position provided an intensive apprenticeship in appellate advocacy, significantly refining my legal writing and my understanding of the considerations that persuade appellate panels. Participation in chambers conferences afforded direct exposure to how appellate courts assess the merits of arguments and the critical importance of precise, well-structured briefing.

I devote the majority of my professional time to drafting appellate briefs and managing appeals. By concentrating my practice on appellate work, I am able to provide sustained attention to each matter and to maintain prompt and clear communication with clients. If desired, arrangements may be made to receive electronic notices from the appellate court so clients may follow developments as they occur.

I am admitted to the State Bar of Texas (all trial and appellate courts); the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas and the Northern District of Illinois; and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 5th and 7th Circuits.

My efforts are enhanced by a team of accomplished attorneys who serve as thoughtful interlocutors and who routinely review and critique my arguments, thereby strengthening the presentation and analysis in each matter. I am committed to applying my training and experience to secure the most favorable outcome possible. Please contact my office to discuss your appeal; adherence to appellate deadlines is essential.
