Attorney Information
Overview
Garrett Clayton co-founded the Clayton, Ramirez & Null Law Firm in 2006 with his good friend and partner, Rick Ramirez. The two met in San Antonio at St. Mary’s Law School, where Garrett was awarded an academic scholarship, Mock Trial Best Speaker Award and the Marinist Award for helping the needy via the school’s criminal defense clinic. “It was at this time I realized that the individuals who truly need the most help are the ones that cannot afford the services of a qualified attorney.” As an alumnus now, Garrett continues to take an active role in St. Mary’s Law as an underwriter for the Innsbruck Scholarship.
Upon returning to his hometown, Houston, Texas, Garrett married Katie Cappadonna Clayton and purchased his first company, AmCap Mortgage, LTD. After starting as CEO, his primary focus became managing this new endeavor. As CEO he has managed to grow AmCap to over 900 employees with licenses in 41 states, which has helped him earn the Houston Business Journal Award of FAST multiple times, as one of the fastest growing Houston-based businesses. “2006 was a very memorable year for me…I finished my stint at academia, started my family and got into the mortgage industry at probably the worse time in history.”
Fortunately, hard work and perseverance paid off and Garrett is incredibly proud that for the last ten years AmCap has earned the prestigious Top Workplace Award from The Houston Chronicle based on survey results from his own employees.
As Garrett has transitioned from a rookie to veteran in the mortgage industry, he transitioned from his role as partner to founder in the Clayton, Ramirez & Null Law Firm. He has invested his time to get fully involved in the mortgage industry, by serving as a board member of the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association and helping to raise money for the TMBA PAC. Employees are encouraged to also educate themselves by joining the Advocacy Army, a mortgage organization that seeks to influence the state legislative agenda on topics that promote fair and ethical lending practices for the mortgage industry and their customers.
In addition to the mortgage industry, Garrett is an active investor in several real estate and insurance companies. “From lead generation to loan servicing and everything in between the common goal of our companies is to provide an unparalleled user experience with a sincere focus on customer service at all levels.”
In his free time, Garrett can always be found spending time with his family raising two daughters. They enjoy attending sporting events, traveling, and collecting art. The Claytons are also active members of their church and local school district. Additionally, Garrett, has also created a charitable arm of his company called, AmCap Gives Back. He is highly involved in this department and seeks to give back both internally and externally. Internally, he has established an educational scholarship program and emergency grant program for employees in need. Externally, AmCap Gives Back volunteers time and funds to the surrounding community by donating to over 40 locals charities, including Habitat for Humanity, Tomball Emergency Assistance Ministries, Folds of Honor, Kids’ Meals Inc., and Opens Doors Foundation.
“The future looks very bright and I am excited about the direction all of our companies are moving in. Not only are we continuing to expand our Texas footprint, but we are growing all over the country, where we are always seeking to do the best job we can by making good loans to good borrowers.”

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
