Attorney Information
Overview
Jamie Kerr graduated from Rice University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2000. He spent nine years in education, working mostly with high school and university students through the process of application for admission to undergraduate, graduate, business, and law schools. In 2009, Jamie returned to school himself and graduated three years later from the University of Texas School of Law with a Juris Doctor.
During his tenure at UT, Jamie focused heavily on clinical education, the study of the dynamics of domestic violence, and criminal law. He spent a year helping victims of domestic violence with their civil cases while in the Domestic Violence Clinic, and represented indigent defendants accused of misdemeanors while working in the Criminal Defense Clinic. Jamie also clerked for the Travis County District Attorney’s office in the Family Justice division, working closely with victims of domestic violence while the felony cases involving their abusers proceeded through the criminal justice system.
Jamie joined the team at Powers Kerr & Rashidi, PLLC in October of 2012, and has since worked on a wide range of cases involving contentious divorces, child custody modifications, complex property division, pre- and post-marital agreements, parental rights terminations, and adoptions. His background in both psychology and education makes him uniquely suited for working with clients through the complicated, sensitive, and emotionally difficult processes often associated with the practice of family law.
Jamie has been Board Certified in Family Law since 2018, and has been recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer every year since 2022. He has served on the Board of the Austin Bar Association Family Law Section since 2025, and is a member of the Texas Academy of Family Law Specialists, Travis County Family Law Advocates, and Austin Bar Association.
Jamie is also an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law, teaching a class called “Mediation for Family Law” to second- and third-year law students.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
