Overview

Lance practices in the areas of commercial litigation, corporate, and real estate law. Lance also serves as a risk management advisor to private companies on corporate governance matters.

Lance represents public and private companies and their directors and officers in high-stakes litigation arising out of mergers or acquisitions (particularly, venture capital or private-equity financed investments), shareholder derivative cases, and internal corporate investigations. Lance has represented companies in array of industries, including financial services, energy, institutional investing, technology, health care and manufacturing. Lance also represents businesses in litigation related to their intellectual property assets as well as real estate disputes.

Additionally, Lance is an effective advocate for pharmaceutical-industry clients involved in disputes. He has successfully represented drug development companies in contractual and IP litigation, winning a unanimous jury verdict of $5.5 million (plus attorney’s fees) in a breach of contract dispute, and obtaining a verdict enforcing a client’s IP rights in a $296 million suit.

In addition to his litigation practice, leveraging his litigation expertise, Lance provides risk management counseling to companies to effectively minimize risk by proactively identifying and addressing governance and common legal issues involved when good business goes bad. Common legal issues include breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, intellectual property protection and enforcement, and shareholder derivative actions.

Lance most recently served as an attorney at Michael Best & Friedrich, LLP, in the Austin, Texas, office, where he worked alongside the Honorable George P. Bush. His prior experience includes practicing with the entrepreneurial law firm RWR Legal in Austin. Previously, Lance was an associate in the Dallas office of Baker McKenzie, LLP, focusing on commercial litigation and e-discovery. When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
