Overview
Jim regularly represents clients in complex business disputes involving diverse areas of law, with a particular focus on litigation involving commercial real estate leasing and landlord/tenant relations, oil and gas construction, leasing, and finance, director and officer liability, securities fraud and compliance, and employment disputes. Over the course of his career, Jim has tried civil and criminal cases to victory before state and federal judges and juries, and has taken numerous cases through successful appeal in state and federal court, including the United States Supreme Court (Filarksy v. Delia, 566 U.S. 377 (2012)). Jim has also guided corporate and individual clients through delicate internal investigations involving issues of employment discrimination, securities fraud and compliance, and international export controls.
Jim's uniquely varied professional experience has given him the opportunity to represent both plaintiffs and defendants in cases involving everything from slip and fall injuries and motor vehicle accidents to complex financial and real estate transactions, multi-billion dollar securities fraud and insider trading schemes, commercial bribery, corporate internal investigations, and public corruption matters involving parallel civil and criminal proceedings. He has also successfully represented clients before administrative agencies and state bar disciplinary authorities.
Jim graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2002, and earned his J.D. cum laude from the George Washington University Law School in 2005. In 2009, Jim returned to GW Law as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Research and Writing, and since 2016 has taught the same course at the University of North Texas - Dallas School of Law. Jim is also a referring attorney for Lambda Legal and Immigration Equality, and has represented several clients pro bono in successful applications for asylum in the United States.
Jim offices in the McCathern Dallas office and is a member of the bars of Texas, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the First, Second, Third, Fifth, and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals, and federal district courts around the country.
