Firm Information

Overview

Founded in 2003, Chavez & Valko is comprised of experienced attorneys with diversified backgrounds and in-depth knowledge of U.S. immigration and nationality law. With combined experience of over 80 years in the practice of immigration law, all of our attorneys are active members of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) who often engage in community outreach events as presenters or volunteers.

Partners Nick Chavez and Martin Valko are highly respected immigration lawyers who are regularly invited by professional and community organizations to speak on immigration topics. They have published numerous articles and practice advisories on complex immigration issues. Nick Chavez is Board Certified in Immigration and Nationality Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Both partners currently serve as official legal advisors to the Consulate General of Mexico in Dallas, Texas (2011-2021), and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic. Additionally, Martin Valko has been appointed as the Honorary Consul of the Slovak Republic in Texas.

When individuals and families face immigration law challenges, their careers, futures and even personal safety can be at stake. And when businesses face ever-tightening immigration and employment law challenges and restrictions, one misstep can lead to denied cases, to thousands of dollars in state and federal fines as well as criminal liability. As part of their dedication to providing the highest quality of client service, partners Chavez and Valko have designed a proprietary, state-of-the art software system for case management.

Whatever the challenge, whoever the client, Chavez & Valko is committed to providing the best legal service with a relentless pursuit for a solution.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
