Attorney Information

Overview

Hal’s passion for the law stems from his admiration for his father, Robert Koelsch. Growing up, Hal saw firsthand the meaningful difference the right attorney could make in the lives of clients and their families. When Robert Koelsch unexpectedly passed away during Hal’s senior year of college, Hal chose to honor his father’s memory by following in his footsteps and pursuing a legal career.

Hal earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Houston Law Center, graduating cum laude in 2024. During law school, he was selected to participate in The Fund for American Studies legal fellowship program in Washington, D.C., was inducted into the Order of the Barons honor society, and he served as Lead Senior Articles Editor for the Houston Journal of International Law, where he was named Editor of the Year.

Hal’s practice focuses on complex commercial litigation. He has represented both individual and corporate clients in a broad range of disputes within the oil and gas industry and other sectors. His experience includes matters involving breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, tortious interference, trade secret misappropriation, shareholder disputes, bankruptcy collection matters, intellectual property rights, deceptive trade practices, declaratory judgments, wrongful termination, personal injury, and statutory and common-law fraud.

In addition to his litigation practice, Hal has assisted sophisticated business clients with transactional and regulatory matters, including contract review, intellectual property assignment and licensing, and pre-litigation dispute resolution. He has also advised clients on compliance issues involving federal and state regulations, including USERRA compliance and PACE financing requirements.

A native Houstonian, Hal attended Memorial High School, where he was a member of the debate team and founded the Philosophy Club. He later attended Baylor University, where he met his wife. Outside the office, Hal enjoys hiking with his wife and their two dogs.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
