Overview
Joe Wearmouth has practiced law in the private or public sector for almost 20 years. After graduating as the valedictorian from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in 2009, he practiced complex civil litigation at an AmLaw 100 firm in Minneapolis and then at a satellite office of a major southeastern law firm in Houston. His clients have ranged from international corporations to owners of small shrimping vessels. Joe relocated to El Paso in 2015 and worked as an in-house litigation attorney for federal law enforcement agencies, including as lead counsel for a multi-agency intelligence center and as a special assistant United States attorney prosecuting felony drug and firearm offenses on the U.S./Mexico border. He also spent two years as a staff attorney for the Texas Eighth Court of Appeals.
Joe grew up in small-town Iowa where he gained a deep understanding and respect for the famous Midwest work ethic. He studied history and wrestled at Central College in Pella, Iowa before he moved to Minnesota for law school. He currently lives in El Paso with his wife, two daughters, and their English bulldog.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
