Houston Criminal Law Lawyer

Overview

I am a former First Assistant Criminal District Attorney for Galveston County. I spent approximately fifteen years honing my skills in trial, case evaluation, and analyzing the law. I have vast experience in determining the legality of initial detentions, arrests, and search/arrest warrants. Many police officers and attorneys came to me for advice on the law and how to proceed on cases. I was hand picked to handle some of the most serious and high profile cases during my tenure at the Galveston County Criminal District Attorney's Office.

In addition to being First Assistant, I have also worked in the Juvenile, Felony, and the Appellate Divisions of the Galveston County Criminal District Attorney's Office. I have handled juvenile matters ranging from skipping school to murder. I have written over 100 appellate briefs. The appellate briefs involved Constitutional issues, evidential matters at trial, sufficiency of the evidence, sufficiency of search and arrest warrants, and application of criminal statutes.

I will bring the same dedication and hard work to your case; whether you are charged with or under investigation for assault, theft, drug charges, driving while intoxicated, fraud, juvenile cases, or any other felony or misdemeanor offense. At Sears Bennett Gerdes LLP, our primary areas of practice are Galveston County, Fort Bend County, and Harris County. We are certainly willing to travel to other locations to help you with your individual case. We are dedicated to protecting your rights.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
