Licensed in 2014 but working in the field of family law since 2009, Walter J. Schouten has worked with, for, and against some of the best family law attorneys in the Houston area on complex family law issues at both the trial court level and appellate level. Walter’s desire to work with the best is driven by a results-oriented approach adopted as early as law school: in 2013, he graduated summa cum laude from South Texas College of Law, higher than over 90% of his graduating class, earning the highest grade in multiple courses along the way, all while working as a law clerk at a boutique family law firm in Houston.
Since then, he has continued this path by achieving victories for his clients, who benefit from his practical, level-headed, and results-driven approach. Representative experience includes:
- Obtaining primary custody for a mother after a lengthy period of having no access to the child due to false allegations of abuse;
- Convincing a court of appeals to reverse a termination judgment against a father;
- Convincing a court of appeals to affirm a six-figure interim attorney fee award in a child custody case;
- Obtaining primary custody for a father in a lengthy and highly contentious custody battle where the mother made numerous attempts to conceal evidence;
- Getting a court to allow a mother to move with her child to a location beyond the standard geographical area that courts impose in the vast majority of cases—generally a very difficult feat.
Walter brings this track record, and the approach that built it, to Toombs Imel & Associates, making him a valuable asset to the firm’s clients.
Board Certified Attorney. Walter received his JD from South Texas School of Law Houston in 2013 with highest honor, summa cum laude. Walter attended the University of Houston, at which he also received a B.A. with honor, cum laude, in 2010. He is board certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
