San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyer

Overview

Attorney Jason Todd served 11 years in the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office under 3 elected District Attorneys, eventually supervising a District Court in the Family Violence Unit. His experience includes Juvenile, White Collar/Public Integrity, DWI/Vehicular Crimes Task Force, and the Criminal Trial Division.

Jason arrived in San Antonio with his family in 2005 after teaching high school social studies in New Haven, Connecticut for 5 years. He worked at Wayside Chapel Evangelical Free Church as the junior high director for 2 years prior to law school at St. Mary's University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. After internships at the United States District Court Western District of Texas, the United States Attorney's Office Western District of Texas, the Texas Attorney General's Office, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Jason joined the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office.

While serving in the Juvenile Division of the Bexar County Criminal District Attorney's Office, Jason worked on cases in which juveniles, children between the ages of ten and seventeen, were charged with anything from misdemeanor drug possession, to aggravated assault and sex crimes, and strived to balance the need for public safety with the specific rehabilitative needs of the juvenile. Jason presented to attorneys and community organizations on the status of the law and the consequences of juvenile crimes for a child in the public school regardless of whether the crime occurred in a school or at a school activity.

In the White Collar/Public Integrity Division, Jason reviewed and litigated cases involving official misconduct and other crimes by law enforcement and public officials, allegations against teachers and other licensed professionals, complex financial crimes, high profile media cases, and people accused of utilizing the internet or computers to exploit children.

As a member of the DWI/Vehicular Crimes Task Force Jason focused on intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault cases. All DWI cases that involved death or serious bodily injury were referred to this unit in addition to failure stop and render aid involving death or serious bodily injury. Jason trained law enforcement and prosecutors in investigative and litigation best practices.

In the Criminal Trial Division, Jason dedicated his time to felony cases including the possession and/or distribution of drugs, felony property crimes, aggravated assault, and murder.

Under his supervision, his team of attorneys in the Family Violence Division ran a docket of 250 cases; including domestic violence, sexual assault, child physical and sexual abuse cases, and murder.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
