Attorney Information
Overview
Former Prosecutor with Decades of Trial Experience in State and Federal Crimes
Attorney Joey Contreras joins Ramos + Del Cueto with a decorated resume that can be rivaled by few attorneys. He was a state prosecutor for 11 years and a federal prosecutor for 18 years.
Contreras was also a Chief in the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office; Chief of the Major Crimes Unit of the United States Attorney’s Office; and the Gang Coordinator for the United States Attorney’s Office, coordinating gang prosecutions from Del Rio to San Antonio to Midland to Waco and El Paso.
Most recently, Contreras was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott as judge of the 187th Judicial District Court based on his superior state and federal prosecution experience.
Contreras stopped counting the number of criminal jury trials he has tried when he reached 200 but estimates he’s tried approximately 300 jury trials, including multiple death penalty cases—four death sentences with two executions carried out.
Some of the cases Contreras tried in federal court were the most complex in the nation. He’s tried approximately 50 murders and supervised the prosecution of another 150 murders.
His numerous awards for outstanding prosecution include two from the United States Attorney’s Office for successful prosecution of the most complex cases handled in the District.
Contreras federal law experience is unparalleled. He is the best choice when looking for legal services regarding federal criminal charges of any sort.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
