    Hired Attorney 2018-2019
Ms. Reyes is completely unprofessional, deceiving, lazy & greedy. She was appointed by a commissioner as the guardian ad litem for our custody case. We weren't married so there was no issue regarding a divorce. She was appointed to represent our child's "best interest." Ms. Reyes' best interest is her bank account. She could care less about the child. She continuously racked up her ridiculous charges. When questioned she responds by punishing you with ridiculous orders and motions. Average time for a GAL on a custody evaluation case without divorce proceedings is 6 months. Ms. Reyes was on the case for over a year. Each time she was completely paid off she would come up with a new motion or order to charge me with. Meanwhile my ex who was supposed to pay half of the fee's has never paid. I was nothing but cooperative and went above and beyond to prove myself. Ms. Reyes simply does not give a f*** about anything but her bank account. Nothing that I accomplished was ever brought up in court. While my ex was in contempt for over 26 charges including failure to appear on multiple occasions, violating the no contact order numerous times, etc. When questioning her about something that she was supposed to do regarding the case I was punished by having to submit a 9 panel hair follicle drug test that that cost $250. I had one day to complete the test and complied and passed. My ex failed to comply which resulted in an automatic fail and NOTHING was done. She was able to keep her regular visitation schedule with no penalty whatsoever. Ms. Reyes was supposed to file a just cause motion and we were told it would take about a month or two. No order was ever filed. I missed one phone call and one email one day and she filed a just cause motion the same day stating that she could not get a hold of me. I've asked her numerous times to contact me via my cell phone. I've called her office over a hundred times and spoken to Ms. Reyes a handful of times. Her paralegal handled everything else. I actually lost days with my child because of Ms. Reyes' incompetence and laziness. She is a horrible guardian ad litem and she should be disbarred. People like Ms. Reyes are what's wrong with the world today.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
