    Hired Law firm 2018-2019
Hired Mr. Bortzfield to represent me in a stalking case where I was the Plaintiff. Simple, clear cut case where I had all the supporting documents, video, and detailed timeline of events. Mr. Bortzfield did not let me use hardly any of the hard evidence I brought to court and for which I was encouraged to present at the recommendation of various police officers who were familiar with the case and defendant. I did most of the speaking in front of the judge over the hour long hearing. Mr. Bortzfield literally asked only 3 irrelevant and vague questions to the defendant. I urged Mr. Bortzfield on various occasions to counter false defendant statements where I had in hand written evidence or video to present and he would not let me. He clearly did not read the case or supporting evidence which I gave him 2 weeks prior to court. He seemed very unsure of himself once in court in front the judge after hyping himself up to me about how good he was and that this would be "slam dunk" win for me. The biggest issue I had was that Mr. Bortzfield NEVER countered anything the defendant said, not once. When I asked him if I counter the defendant's lies since he was not, he told me that "I got this." At this point I should have fired him and represented myself but i trusted he knew what he was doing. Conclusion: case dismissed against defendant who was stalking my daughter. By the way, the defendant had no legal representation which goes to show how ineffective Mr. Bortzfield was. Best part was he had the gall to charge me for his services or lack there of. My daughter who made a good observation said maybe I should have judged Mr. Bortzfield on his success as a lawyer based on the car he drives which is what I've used as a qualifier since for attorneys! (It was an older model, rusty compact pick up.) Don't waist your time or money on Scott Bortzfield...there are absolutely great attorney's in the St. Albans area I've since discovered - Bortzfield not being one of them.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
