Attorney Information
Overview
Katherine D. Carlo is the managing partner of Lowe Carlo & Maupin. She is a 1991 graduate of James Madison University and a 1994 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law. She has been with the firm her entire career and devotes her practice exclusively to Family Law. She represents clients in all areas of domestic relations including adoption, divorce, custody, visitation, equitable distribution, support, valuation of businesses and other property, the negotiation and preparation of both premarital agreements and comprehensive settlement agreements, and post-divorce enforcement and modification actions. She appears regularly in both juvenile and circuit courts throughout the Northern Virginia area, including the City of Alexandria and Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudon counties.
Katie is unique in her ability to provide compassionate and straightforward advice to her clients and her ability to explain complicated legal matters in terms clients can understand while being sensitive to the emotional aspects of Family Law matters. While she will first seek to work with opposing counsels and find an amicable resolution to her clients' matters, she is always prepared to litigate when it would serve her client's interests. She has almost thirty years of trial experience and motions practice.
Katie has resided in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area her entire life and has lived with her husband in Alexandria for the past 25 years. Together they are the parents of two adult children and two dogs, Salty and River. When she is not working, Katie enjoys spending time on her boat with her husband and traveling (preferably somewhere with rollercoasters).

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
