Hired Attorney 2017-2019I chose Nan Joseph to represent me in a high conflict divorce after consulting other attorneys in the area. Several of these had remarked that the opposing counsel in this case was considered “difficult” to deal with, and that I would need someone very good on my side. Nan was recommended as being well grounded and having a tremendous amount of experience and local savvy. She shepherded me through the entire process, from answering the original complaint, through discovery, mediation, and ultimately several days of trial. It was a long fight but, in the end, the judge’s ruling seemed fair, and was much closer to what we were asking than what my (now) ex- was asking. After going through the billing at the end, it turns out that I had spent substantially less than my ex-, despite opposing counsel’s lower hourly rate. Why? I don’t know all of the reasons, but I can tell you that Nan was constantly giving me advice on how to spend less money and use her time more efficiently. It seems to have worked. Nan and her staff were friendly and caring, and made me feel like I was in good hands during one of the most difficult times of my life. I recommend Nan Joseph and her services highly.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
