Hired Attorney 2022-2023She was assigned our Guardian Ad Litem. While she did listen to the background when it came time for her input she was biased toward the mother even though mom had abandoned the children for over a year and was in another state. Mom had left the children without financial or emotional support and no way for dad to care for the children and work until he had secured care. She gave no regard that mom threw the children’s items at dad and his gf in front of the children. That mom had chased dad and his gf across three ball fields yelling profanities at them in front of other children and parents. That mom had taken the children when it was not her time and she had not communicated an exchange. That mom had threatened to harm dad and the gf. Mom continuously made false allegations to the police and CPS as well asking for emergency protection orders with more false allegations. Dad was able to dispute and backup with documentation every false allegation yet none of it seemed to deter the decision that mom should have equal time with the children. Mom moved in with her bf of 2 months and it was said to be still under investigation after court order was in place for no other individuals to be in the home or for the mom to move without notifying the court. Dad requested the guardian ad litem to help with best interest of the children and the children came home shaking and visibly upset from moms after being told to keep secrets and not say anything. None of it seemed to matter as long as mom got her time. Dad still lays for everything and mom gets visitation and joint custody for abandonment and mental abuse.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
